PFC Brakes, a Ryder Fleet Products supplier, has been named the official brake supplier for the 2015 Indy Lights Series which will be featured on the new Dallara IL-15 car

PFC Brakes, a Ryder Fleet Products supplier, has been named the official brake supplier for the 2015 Indy Lights Series and will be featured on the new Dallara IL-15 car, which started testing in the summer of 2014. The new Performance Friction full brake package on the Dallara IL-15 utilizes purpose built, shape optimized 6-pot Monobloc calipers, PFC discs with patented slot pattern, and PFC CarbonMetallic © race pads. PFC Brakes supplies all 3 “Road to Indy” IndyCar Series along with winning more championships worldwide than all other brake suppliers combined.

The Indy Lights series has a rich history as a development platform for many of today’s top drivers and is a vital step for competitors to reach the pinnacle of open-wheel racing in America. The series boasts over 100 drivers as graduates including Marco Andretti, Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan.

Performance Friction Brakes –  BRED FROM RACING, MADE FOR STREET
Over 1500 championships have been won on PFC carbon metallic pads but fleet maintenance managers also declare them a winner because of their stopping power, safety, extended pad and rotor life and corrosion resistance. Performance Friction Corporation is known for their innovative brake solutions and is the standard of excellence in high-performance vehicles, commercial fleets and street vehicles.

If you are a truck or bus operator, you may have experienced a great deal of problems with tone ring corrosion causing loss of ABS signals. This can lead to the need for the fleet to change the rotors at very low mileage – the rotor is fine but the ABS tone ring has failed. Testing has shown mere coatings are ineffective in preventing this corrosion because of very high, sustained temperatures in the rotor hat.  Performance Friction Long Life Brake Rotors addresses this concern with a design created specifically to better handle the heat. This can translate into huge savings for the fleet in parts, labor and downtime. Download our cost savings calculator (Excel Spreadsheet).

With a strong emphasis on the environment, PFC brake pads are more than just asbestos-free – they contain no antimony, lead, chromium or potassium titanate – making them safe for the technician, the environment, and the driver.

Ryder Fleet Products carries a wide range of disc brake pads and brake rotors and can assist you in cross reference lists, application guides, pricing and more.

Keep Your Tires From Becoming Hot & Bothered

The summer months can wreak havoc on your truck’s tires. As a matter of fact, mid-May through early October is considered by many to be tire-blowout season. Scorching air temperatures along with the high temperatures of the roads can cause the air in your tires to expand quicker, thus leading to an unsuspected and possibly dangerous blowout. Under inflated tires are equally as dangerous. It is important to check your tire pressure (and tire tread) even more frequently during these hot months to avoid a hazardous consequence. Proper tire air inflation pressure also saves on fuel costs and helps prevent uneven tire wear.

Before you head out on the road, always be sure to check the pressure and condition of your tires. Ryder Fleet Products suggests the best time to do this is before a trip when the temperature of your tire and the outside air is the same. Check your owner’s manual to determine the correct pounds per inch (PSI), for your tires.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

The easiest way to prevent a blowout is by installing a high-quality tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). These tire pressure sensors from TST have a strong emphasis on preventing blowouts by alerting the driver through a flashing LED light, audible alarm, and alert icon that activates when the tire pressure or temperature exceeds present thresholds. They can also monitor up to 34 tire positions and are all multi-zoned, enabling you to monitor tire pressure and tire temperature on individual settings.

Ryder Fleet Products wants to help you stay safe and on the road this summer. We carry a wide assortment of tire pressure monitoring systems, for both heavy duty commercial trucks and recreational vehicles, to help you properly maintain your tire pressure. TST is an innovator of high-quality tire pressure monitoring systems for commercial trucks, heavy-duty vehicles and Recreational Vehicles. They have been awarded the Motorhome and Trailer Life Readers Choice Awards for 2014.

Drug & Alcohol Management: How to Comply with the DOT Requirements

Managing a drug & alcohol program involves training your supervisors and testing and training drivers of commercial motor vehicles — in addition to handling the related recordkeeping — and is required under Part 382 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs).

If your company operates vehicles that require drivers to possess a commercial driver’s license (CDL), your operation and the drivers of those vehicles are subject to the Part 382 and Part 40 requirements.

You must ensure that all persons designated to supervise drivers receive the following:

  • 60 minutes of training on alcohol use
  • 60 minutes of training on drug use

Supervisors will use this training to determine whether reasonable suspicion exists to require a driver to undergo testing. Additionally, you’re required to provide drivers with detailed information covering 11 key areas, including the effects of drug & alcohol use, your company’s policies, testing requirements, and how and where drivers can get help for substance abuse.

Part 382 requires the following six types of driver testing:

  • Pre-employment
  • Random
  • Post-accident
  • Return-to-duty
  • Follow-up
  • Reasonable suspicion

Employers are expected to maintain the following records of their drug & alcohol programs under Part 382:

  • Records related to the collection processes
  • Records related to the driver’s test results
  • Documentation of any other violations of drug or alcohol misuse
  • Records related to evaluations
  • Records related to education and training
  • Records related to drug and alcohol testing

Our full range of products and services can help you eliminate the hassles and complexities of administering an effective, compliant drug & alcohol program. Roadcheck 2014: Preparing Your Drivers for Increased Enforcement

Roadcheck is an annual event sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), North America’s leading commercial vehicle enforcement organization. Within a 3-day period, 10,000 CVSA and FMCSA inspectors conduct roadside inspections at more than 1,500 locations. The goal of this event is to increase safety and security on the highways and reduce the number of crashes involving commercial vehicles.

All commercial motor vehicles (trucks, buses, and motor coaches), plus all CMV drivers of those vehicles, could be subject to a North American Standard Level 1 roadside inspection.

The event begins at midnight on June 3 and runs for 72 straight hours — JUNE 3-5.

Last year, during Roadcheck 2013, 24.1% of all the vehicles inspected were placed out of service. Nearly 1 in 4 vehicles! Are your vehicles inspection-ready? Are your drivers ready, too? If not, either or both could be placed out of service. That can lead to a multitude of negative consequences, including delayed shipments, lost revenue, a tarnished company image, loss of customers, DOT penalties, and a hit to your CSA BASIC scores.

Roadcheck 2013 results:

  • Total inspections — 73,023
  • Motorcoach inspections — 1,471
  • Vehicle out-of-service rate — 24.1%
  • Cargo securement violations in relation to all OOS violations — 11.7%
  • Brake-related violations in relation to all vehicle OOS violations — 49.6%
  • Driver out-of-service rate — 4.3%
  • Seatbelt violations issued — 899

That’s just a sampling of last year’s results.

We offer a wide range of products and services to help you ensure your vehicles and drivers are prepared to pass a comprehensive inspection — during Roadcheck 2014 and throughout the year — so you can protect your safety reputation, CSA BASIC scores, and bottom line.

These are just a few of the products that J.J. Keller has to offer in order to keep your vehicles and your drivers on the road. Be sure to visit www.RyderFleetProducts.com for a complete list of J.J. Keller products.

Replace Shock Absorbers to Improve Tire Life

The cost of replacing tires on any size truck generally tends to be higher than any other part that needs replacing. While checking tire pressure and alignment on a frequent preventative maintenance basis is a good practice, it’s important to make note of another tire preventative maintenance procedure – replacing shock absorbers.

Shock absorbers that are considerably worn tend to cause vehicles to bounce excessively and this in turn can cause premature wear on your tires. If you’re driving your truck on a bumpy road, the worn shocks on your vehicle can cause the weight on your tires to fluctuate anywhere from less than a thousand pounds to several times that load. And, if you’re driving on the highway, this fluctuation can happen close to a 100 times per minute according to Reagan Industries.

Once your tire starts to show signs of premature or irregular wear caused by worn shocks, the irregularity will continue despite replacing your worn shocks, and this in turn can lead to a considerably shortened life of your tire.

It’s important to note that when a new tire is installed, your shock absorber may appear to be in working condition, however, according to Reagan Industries, “if it has been run over 150,000 miles, it will have stroked over 30 million times.” Since shocks slowly lose their ability to dampen over time, it’s very likely that your shocks will cause excessive bounce leading to excessive tire wear.

So the next time you bring your vehicle in for tire preventative maintenance, be sure to consider changing your shocks before they go bad – remember, shocks replaced at the time of tire replacement can lead to savings that are far greater than the added preventative maintenance costs.

5 Signs of Wiper Wear

If your windshield looks like it has streaks or if there are beads of water left behind after you run your windshield wipers, it may be time to change the blade of your wiper. It is important that your vision is clear when you are operating a vehicle – for your safety and for the safety of others on the road.

We recommend that you replace your blade every six months on average, especially if you are on the road daily and making use of your wipers. Here are some signs that your blade is worn or perhaps even defective and needs to be replaced.

  • The rubber on your blade is split or cracked in various spots.
  • There is cloudy film on your windshield left behind because of dirt, oil or grime on the rubber blade.
  • The rubber appears to have pulled away from the wiper frame.
  • The wiper frame is bent or broken causing the arm not to function properly.
  • The blade does not make full contact with your windshield.

In extreme cold temperatures, be sure to replace your wiper blade with a winter wiper blade, which tends to be thicker, more flexible and rugged to withstand freezing conditions. Winter wiper blades have a rugged rubber cover that prevents slush from freezing joints of the heavy duty frame.

To help maintain your wiper blades, it’s a good idea to wipe the rubber on the blade using paper towels every so often in order to get rid of loose dirt or grime – this will eliminate or at least minimize the hazy film on your windshield. If your windshield still appears grimy or cloudy, be sure to use a professional grade, non-abrasive glass cleaner to get rid of the streaks or film. Simply spray some on and use a heavy-duty squeegee for a quick clean up.

Ryder Fleet Products is proud to offer our customers a large selection of truck wiper blades, arms and refills at low prices. Our quality wiper blades, arms and refills are ideal for your semi, light, medium, heavy-duty and trailer truck needs. We carry quality truck wiper blades, wiper arms and wiper refills from Anco.
