What to Consider When Choosing a Truck Mattress

truck mattress

The right truck mattress waiting for you in the sleeper berth can be just what you need to rejuvenate. A sleepless, restless night is no fun. And waking up after an uncomfortable night and having to go to work – especially if you drive for a living – is less than ideal and can present unique problems.

Obviously, a well-rested driver is going to be more alert to road incidents and be able to make quicker corrective actions. For your time on the road, you need to stay rested, comfortable and healthy.  If you’re contemplating purchasing a truck mattress and could use a little guidance, we hope the tips below can help steer you in the right direction.

1. Truck Mattress Sizes – Which Mattress Fits My Truck?

Sizes and configurations of sleeping cabs vary, so start with measuring both the length and the width of the sleeper berth to use as a guide when looking at mattress sizes.

Common truck mattress sizes are: 42″ x 80″ , 38″ x 80″  , 35″ x 79″, 32″ x 79″, 36″ x 76″. If you need a mattress for the top bunk, one of the most common sizes is 28×79 and generally fits most Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Mack and Peterbilt trucks. Volvo trucks usually have a larger top bunk and can fit a mattress that is 38×80.

To see which mattress size will fit your truck, view our guide to  truck mattress sizes.

Keep in mind that there are many variations in vehicle applications so it is still a good idea to measure the width and length of the sleeper berth to ensure optimum mattress fit.

Many truck mattresses are conveniently shipped compression packed and don’t expand to their full size until they are unpackaged. This makes the mattress easier to handle and maneuver into the sleeper area, regardless of the mattress size. Unpack once inside the sleeping area and give the mattress a few minutes to take shape and reach its full size.

2. Comfort level/thickness

A truck mattress will not only vary in width and length, but also in thickness. What do you prefer sleeping on? Will a thin mattress suit you, or are you dreaming of resting on something thicker, plusher, and topped with memory foam?

Mattress thicknesses generally range from between 4″ thick to 8.5″ plus. A 4″ thick mattress may not offer all the cushion of a thicker one (especially when one driver sleep while another drives)  but can be a great economical option or a good choice for a top bunk that is slept on infrequently or for use as a camper mattress.

For added comfort, go with a thicker mattress or a mattress topped with memory foam such as these memory foam truck mattresses.

Other popular thicknesses are 6.5″ and 5.5″.  Look for one with a quilted top for more cushion and comfort than a non-quilted one.

3. How easy is the mattress to clean?

This may be an important consideration for team drivers, company owned trucks or any situation where a truck is to be used by multiple drivers. Some truck mattresses, such as these from Mobile Innerspace, have a cashmere removable cover that you can easily take off and throw in the washer. Alternatively, a basic cloth or plastic mattress cover can be purchased separately and will help protect the mattress. The plastic will help to resist stains and spills.

4. Is the mattress reversible?

A reversible mattress is designed so it can be flipped over and used on either side. Useful for increasing the life span of the mattress.

5. Does the truck mattress meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards?

A quick check should let you know if a mattress meets the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 302 (MVSS-302) – Flammability of Interior Materials – Passenger Cars, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles, Trucks, and Buses.
This standard specifies burn resistance requirements for materials useFMCSA logod in the occupant compartments of motor vehicles. Its purpose is to reduce deaths and injuries to motor vehicle occupants caused by vehicle fires, especially those originating in the interior of the vehicle from sources such as matches or cigarettes.

Each mattress sold at RyderFleetProducts.com passes MVss-302 requirements.

Air Ride Truck Seats – A Driving Force in Your Comfort.

Air ride truck seat

Today’s heavy duty trucks can be quite sophisticated with many cutting-edge, hi-tech products behind the wheel and under the hood. At Ryder Fleet Products, we continuously research and meet with industry manufacturers and suppliers to discover and bring you the latest advancements in truck technology.

This time, our focus turns from technology for the truck to technology for the driver. Driver comfort, we all know, is paramount to a safe, healthy and productive driver and it all starts in the driver’s seat. And today’s driver seats are quickly evolving beyond the regular factory installed seat to an ergonomically designed seat with options such as lumbar support, side bolster support, seat tilt, extendable cushion seats, memory height, and even heated seats to perfectly support your body as you drive.

200L_s_newTo offer our customers the best in premium air ride seats, we have partnered with Prime Seating, Inc., located in Duluth, GA. These specially designed and engineered air ride truck seats are made for both medium and heavy duty trucks (and buses) and use the latest technology to promote a healthy driving position.

The seats range from a 200 series to the fully luxurious 600 series. Each series has different options, and in this article, we break these options down for you so you can easily compare one model to another.

You can see all the Prime Seat series offered by Ryder Fleet Products by visiting our Prime Seating page.

BASIC INFO
First let’s discuss some basic information that is helpful to know as you begin your research and comparison.

These seats come standard with the 4.25″ tall mounting base.  A lower 1.75″ mounting base is available upon request at no extra charge. The short base is popular for those who want the seat to settle to a position closer to the floor.

Each series (with the exception of the 600 series) is available in either cloth or leather. A “C” after the series number (i.e. 200C) indicates the cloth version and an “L” (i.e. 200L) indicates the leather version.

graphicjpg

A useful thing to note is that there is no price difference between the cloth and leather options. All of the leather series are made from a very soft, high end synthetic leather, with the exception of the 600 series which features a natural leather.

An “H” in the product name (i.e. 300LH), lets you know the seat is a mid-back seat and features an adjustable headrest.

All of the seats come with a 3-year warranty on the foam and cushions and a million mile or 5 year warranty on the seat structure itself.

The seats are simple to install and should take about 15-20 minutes.

EACH SERIES SUMMARIZED
Let’s go over each of the series in detail now. As we mentioned, they start with the 200 series and go on up to the luxurious 600 series which boasts not only heating options, but a cooling option as well.

The 200 SERIES
The 200 series (200C for cloth; 200L for leather) offers an innovative seat with a fully reclining backrest and dual arm rests. It also features an air height adjustment, fore/aft slide adjustments (to position you closer or farther away from the steerling wheel) and fore/art isolator – lock/unlock feature. You’ll find the 200 series a vast improvement over the standard factory installed truck seat and you’ll notice a welcome difference in your driving comfort.

‘Tis the Season To Prepare Your Fleet for the Cold Weather

hb_winterize2014

As winter draws near, lots of us start looking out for deals on items like Christmas sweaters, winter coats, and maybe a snow sled. However, if you’re an owner operator, fleet manager, or just do a lot of winter driving, chances are you’ve got ice scrapers, winter wiper blades and heated mirrors on your list as you begin to prepare for the wintry days ahead on the road.

At Ryder Fleet Products, we can help you and your fleet get ready for the blustery, cold days of winter driving conditions and have put together the following checklist for you as you begin to winterize your truck and settle down for a long winter’s drive.

Ice Scrapers, Snow brushes
Remove snow, ice and frost from your windshield with an ice scraper or use a snow brush to help remove accumulated snow.

Winter Wiper Blades
One of the easiest things you can do to prepare for winter driving is to replace your current wipers with those especially designed for winter conditions. Winter wipers are thicker, more flexible, and can remove heavy rain, sleet and snow better than regular blades. A good winter wiper blade usually consists of a rugged rubber cover over a heavy duty frame to prevent slush from freezing joints.

De-Icer
Have a de-icer on hand such as CRC’s Ice Off to melt snow, ice and frost on contact from your windows. This de-icer works in sub-zero temperatures and will not harm a vehicle’s finish.

Tip: Also useful for thawing frozen locks.

 Coolant Tester
A coolant tester, such as this refractometer from Fleetguard Cummins provides a fast and easy way to determine the freeze point protection in both Ethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol coolants. It is more accurate than test strips or float-type hydrometers and is as easy as 1,2,3.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems
Cold weather can lower tire pressure and cause your tires to become under inflated. Not only can this lead to increased tire wear and lower gas mileage, but it also presents the risk of a blow out. Check out these tire pressure monitoring systems for trucks from TST – the leader in tire pressure and temperature monitoring equipment.

Tip: A tire pressure monitoring system also protects you during the summer months when tires are prone to becoming over inflated.

For more info on tire pressure and the effect it can have on your tires as well as your vehicle, read Have Peace of Mind on the Road with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.  or Benefits of Checking Tire Pressure Regularly.

Gloves
Ryder Fleet Products carries a wide range of gloves including kevlar, leather, latex, neoprene, and pvc gloves. For winter weather purposes, though, here are two of our favorites.

The Powergrab Orange Glove
These insulated gloves are often used in Refrigerated Areas, Utilities, Food Processing, Commercial Fishing, Construction, Outdoor Winter Activities and Recreation. We like them for their excellent thermal insulation and extra softness.

Mechanics’ Gloves
Mechanics’ gloves offer protection and comfort all year long but in winter, they have the added benefit of adding warmth as well. Shop Ryder Fleet Products for a wide variety of Mechanics’ Gloves21242HY

Tip: Most of our gloves are available in several sizes –  be sure to look for the correct size when placing your order.

Ice Cleats
Ice cleats fit easily over all types of shoes and boots and help maintain traction in slick outdoor conditions. The cleats are removable but if you are a driver, and don’t want to remove them each time you drive, consider an ice cleat such as the Jordan David Low-Pro

ice cleats

Heated Rearview Mirrors
Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the foggiest of them all? Keep fog and ice off side view mirrors and spot other vehicles easier with a heated mirror. You’ll find trusted names in vehicle mirrors at Ryder Fleet Products. Shop from well known brands such as Velvac, Grote, Retrac and Mirror Lite.

Tip: A lot of the mirrors look similar so be sure to check the part number to make sure it will fit your particular vehicle.

Advertising Wheels are Turning at Ryder Fleet Products

When you consider the number of miles most trucks travel on a daily basis along with the fact that each truck is effectively a large, blank, moving canvas, you get a unique advertising opportunity. The surfaces of the truck can function great as a moving billboard – a billboard that can spread your advertising message to people right along your truck route.

At Ryder Fleet Products, our trucks travel all over the country delivering after market, heavy duty truck parts and tools representing over 400 manufacturers”, according to Senior Director and General Manager, Scott Gates. “We wanted to use this as an opportunity to share our brand on the road – after all, that’s where the majority of our products are used.”

Ryder began working with Media Vehicle Graphic Solutions in Georgia to help create and install full color truck-side graphics on a select number of our North American trucks – beginning the journey of driving through the advertising clutter that exists with so many mediums today.

According to “The visual impact of trucks in traffic,” a study completed by The American Trucking Association, 98% of truck ads create a positive image for the company.

truckmockupsjpg

To find the right theme for the campaign, our Marketing Department came up with several different options. In the end, the message, “Looking for Heavy Duty Truck Parts? We’re Right Beside You”, was chosen because it’s short, it’s simple and the phrase “we’re right beside you” works well whether you go with the literal meaning or view it as a reflection of the support that we strive to offer to our customers.

We look forward to connecting with a new and unique audience as we take our message on the road.

Save Fuel and Increase Profits with Deflecktor Wheel Covers

The First-Of-Its-Kind Aerodynamic Wheel Cover

Fuel is the single greatest expense in the life cycle of a heavy truck.  The deep-well cavities of heavy truck wheels create unwanted turbulence, which decreases fuel efficiency.  The Deflecktor Aero Wheel Cover’s patented design reduces this turbulence.  In twelve separate, rigorous SAE type 2 J1321 fuel efficiency tests over a two-year period by Schneider National, one of the largest truck fleets in the US, the Deflecktor Aero Wheel Cover saved approximately 1% in fuel costs per set of four wheel covers. A tractor-trailer combination can expect fuel savings of up to 2% when installing covers on all eight wheel ends. Deflecktor Aero Wheel Covers are the most cost-effective, aerodynamic wheel solution available on the market, providing immediate return on investment.
